Space
Finmeccanica has a long tradition of excellence in the space sector and has now reached important positions at world level. It designs, develops and produces satellites for civil and military use, for positioning and telecommunications purposes, for Earth observation and for remote surveying. It also produces components for space transportation and orbiting structures and supplies space services having high value added.
The Space Alliance between Finmeccanica and Thales has given rise to Europe's first space operator in the form of two joint ventures. The first is Telespazio, a leader in the fields of satellite management and services pertaining to ground observation, satellite navigation, integrated and value added connectivity. The second is Thales Alenia Space, a satellite systems leader operating on the cutting edge of orbiting infrastructures.
SELEX Galileo contributes significantly to the space industry with technologies such as the atomic clock, hyperspectral optical sensors, gyroscopes and asset sensors.
Three areas have been given centre stage in Paris:
- navigation and info mobility, with displays by Group companies contributing to the extensive European satellite navigation programme, Galileo;
- earth observation by the COSMO-SkyMed programme, a constellation of four satellites for dual-purpose observation of the Earth;
- homeland security, with Sicral, the first Italian military satellite for telecommunications, entirely designed and built by the Group.satellite for telecommunications, entirely designed and built by the Group.
